A Recovery Coach supports ALL pathways of Recovery whereas a Sponsor is normally abstinence-focused. Recovery Coaches are trained professionals who use various strategies to support individuals in all areas of life. On the other hand, a Sponsor is someone who has been through 12 steps, shares their personal experience, and is there to guide an individual through the 12-step process often following a specific program like AA.

Recovery coaching and traditional counseling follow distinct paths. Traditional therapy often explores past traumas and emotions, while recovery coaching centers on the present and future. Coaches help individuals set clear goals, create plans, and navigate challenges with a focus on accountability, relapse prevention, and personalized support tailored to the client's circumstances.
Unlike therapists who treat and diagnose under a medical model, recovery coaches operate under a support model. It's important to note that coaches do not provide therapy but aim to help clients with behavior patterns and coping mechanisms.
Both therapy and coaching share the goal of assisting individuals, yet they operate under different care models.
Absolutely! Recovery coaching is a great support for those facing addiction. Here's why it's beneficial:

Personalized Guidance: Tailored to individual needs, focusing on present and future goals.

We often get asked about data.
Where is the data that supports the Recovery Coach model?
Are these trainings based on evidence based practices?
These are great questions.
As Recovery Coaching is a peer-based service, there hasn't been a need for documentation - and without documentation, there isn't data to report. However, as more organisations have begun utilizing coaches to provide recovery support services for those in recovery from alcohol and other addictions, we are finding more articles written to show support of this model.
